Ok, I hate to be cliched here, but this cold is really kicking me in the gut. Or lungs. Whatever. So, I was thinking about what my typical routine is when I start getting really sick. Now you stay-at-homers know that you really have to be down before you can get away with most of this, but this signals the inevitable slide into "just kill me and get it over with".
1. I start drinking hot ginger lemonade. This works for both colds and the stomach yuckies. Sadly, the ginger at the supermarket had been recalled? What's up with that?
2. I also make a whopping cauldron of garlic soup and eat a lot of it.
3. I try really really hard not to knit. It just galls me that I have all this "free time" and I can't knit. But I've learned the hard way that it's much better to just do something else.
4. So I read. A lot. So far this week, I've read Tender at the Bone (good if you like Ruth Reichl or restaurant critics), Between a Wok and a Hard Place (Tamar Myers...don't really recommend), I Will Plant You a Lilac Tree: A Memoir of a Schindler's List Survivor (Laura Hillman; you must read this book), Now You See Me (Rochelle Krich; yay! Now I have someone to fill in the gaps when Faye Kellerman isn't publishing), and part of Best Served Cold (Jimmie Ruth Evans), and Help for the Harried Homeschooler (Christine Field)
5. One thing that I don't do a lot of is play computer games. Those take brains and when I'm sick, I have even fewer than usual.
6. Crave ice cream or popsicles, depending on whether or not my sickness involves puking.
7. Wander around the house in the dead of the night. I have insomnia at the best of times but when you wake up hacking half the night, it's hard to go back to sleep.
8. Sometimes I quilt, if I've got a hand quilting project going on, but I won't piece or machine quilt. Just way too many things that can go wrong with that.
9. Sleep as much as humanly possible. I will beg and bribe the girls to watch the twins so I can nap without fear that they'll tear down the house. If they can't watch the twins, I'll pop in a video and lie in the middle of the living room floor for some shuteye. For some reason, they like to crawl and climb all over me and it doesn't bother me when I'm that sick. What bothers me is when they wander off. That wakes me up.
10. At least once during the illness, I find myself waxing philosophical and promising myself that I'll live a better life once I get my strength back. As you see, I rarely do, but it is part of the pattern.
11. Spend a lot of time saying, "Please just leave me alone to die or survive. Alone." I don't think I complain a lot when I'm sick and I clean up after myself, but I don't want people fluttering over me. I'm one of those people who just wants to crawl back into the bedroom and have other people leave me alone.
12. Eat a lot of fruit. That's when I have a cold, obviously. If I have a stomach bug, I favor ginger ale and saltines.
13. Wish that I wasn't sick, marvel at how really rotten/weak/cruddy I feel, and vow to appreciate good health when it returns. Sometimes that even happens!
Now if you don't mind, I think I'll go be alone.
