The 5 minute gardener

One of the things that has very much gone by the wayside with my illness/surgery/recovery is my gardening. I sneaked out to my veggie patch Tuesday after my doctor's appointment. I carried a pair of scissors. I figured that I could at least start slicing down the weeds, even if I couldn't pull them up (ground's a little hard, might strain the stomach). Whilst out there, I noticed some overripe okra and some ripe tomatoes and jalapenos, so I picked those. All of this activity took about 5 minutes. I was exhausted. I came in, dumped the veggies in the colander (conveniently placed next to the sink) and took a nap.

This spring I finally realized my years-long plan of having a garden devoted to herbs. Unfortunately, during my convalescence, it has been almost overgrown with grass and other weeds. Yesterday I had the idea that I executed this morning, much to the dismay of my children. I told them that we were going to spend 15 minutes in the morning pulling weeds out of my gardens. There was the expected rolling of the eyes as well as a few protests but I held fast and we started this morning. I couldn't do anything for more than about 5 minutes, but the children managed to pull up some grass and get the thing started. Oh, and I had them work in the herb garden, so at least I feel like I'm making an effort.

I also planted 8 bean seeds, watered them, and then, my work for the day completed, I came back into the house. And rested. One day I will have some energy again. For now, I'm just pleased that I at least seem to be sleeping at night.

Lori, Hope you're feeling better. I have been out of town a lot lately as well and haven't spent much time on my beloved blog. Seems I get all this inspiration when I am driving and can't write it down...then old man forgetful sets in and I can't remember all that incredible inspiration when it comes to blog time. I sit and stare at the computer like a cow staring at a new gate!

My garden has suffered much in my absence as well....much to my dismay...for I do love to garden.

Sorry to hear about your recent surgery...have those wonderful children make you a cup of fresh iced tea and put your feet up. You deserve it!

Blessings,

Sandy
