Well, I guess we scared off another potential Guardian of Elof. I don't know how we manage to do it, but we do it every time. And then something else even worse happened. Elof got very sick.
After Friend Husband left for work yesterday, he called and said that he though Elof had diarrhea, wasn't eating, and was very lethargic. Indeed, when I went out to check, he had bloody diarrhea and hadn't eaten or drank anything that we could see. I called the vet and made an appointment with my very favorite vet of all time, Dr. Moore. (This is the one that started crying when we put Ronald to sleep.) In the meantime, I looked stuff up on the Internet. After looking at a few pronouncements of dire ill health, I decided to just wait until 5:30 when Dr. Moore could see him.
The good news was that he 1) didn't have parvo and 2) didn't look like he had worms (although they weren't totally able to tell). The bad news was that he obviously didn't feel well, that his gums were dry (meaning that he was dehydrated) and that he'd lost weight that he didn't have to lose. Oh, other good news was that he's been neutered within the last 4 months, which begs other questions about how someone could pay to have a dog neutered then abandon it, but that's another story altogether.
So, she sent me out the door with 2 packets of meds and sent Elof out the door with a skin full of fluids (which made him look like a lopsided camel or a dog with a very oddly-placed goiter) and instructions to call tonight and give her an update so she didn't worry about him on her day off.
The fluids seemed to help him some. His "lips" (he has these floppy jowls) were warm instead of cold. He still didn't eat and he just flopped back on his bed in the garage when we came home. Later on, Friend Husband took out a leftover waffle but he had no interest in it.
When I went out to give him some meds and to put the dogs in their crate for the evening, Elof had the whole waffle in his mouth and would not put it down. Good news! He's got food in his mouth and he's guarding it! He ended up eating that while I put Lucy the Wonder Dog in the crate, then settled down to sleep with her in the heated crate.
This morning he was perkier but still not interested in eating or drinking. I'm going to go out there in a little while (in the pouring rain, no less) to see if he'll drink a little something for me. Poor little guy.
It begs a lot of questions, doesn't it? Why help a stray dog which is going to end up costing you a lot of money? (Answer: Because you can't let animals suffer, you dolt! Plus I didn't think we'd still have him 6 weeks later.) Any why in the world can't we find a non-flaky person to take him?
Thanks for the nice comments about Sarah and my missing her. I still miss her and her siblings are going crazy with the need to connect with her. We can't get her to answer her cell and they aren't answering Skype. The other option is to call the house but I don't want my in-laws thinking we're stranger/needier than we are, so I guess we'll wait until later on. David was in tears this morning, wanting me to "Go get Sarah!"
I guess the other thing I was thinking about yesterday is that, while it's hard to let any child "go" when the time comes, I think it's more difficult with children who have issues which might make it harder for them to cope with life. With Sarah, it was the letting go plus the fear that my in-laws wouldn't acknowledge Sarah's own specialness and her special needs. I guess that's always a fear for parents with "different" children. What will happen to them when we aren't here to run interference? I know that we try to train all of our children to deal with life as it comes but there comes a time when they have to do it on their own and that takes a tremendous leap of faith.
Well, that wasn't exactly what I wanted to express but it seems that my son has decided to play with pancake syrup in my absence so I must bid you a fond "adieu".

Ouch
Ok, this will probably be of excruciating length, not because so much as happened but because I've been blogging in my brain for a full 24 hours and it needs to be on the blog or it'll be racketing around in my brain for even longer. Of course, my brain being what it is, it is quite possible that I'll forget half of it so the warning may be for naught.
First of all, Cousin Monica asked me if Elof is off living the sweet in Lebanon, OH. He is not. He is still living the sweet life in our back yard. So mourning has been called off for now. The guy who seemed so interested and cool has not called me back with the name of his vet reference and I'm not turning sweet Elof over to some miscreant who won't at least tell me the name of his vet. Perhaps he's an ok guy but I'm suspicious that he is a bad 'un who wanted to hurt sweet Elof.
Meanwhile, sweet Elof has escaped our protective custody at least twice recently. He always comes back but it's a little disconcerting.
Saturday I spent at Circle Tail walking various puppies on both mud and ice. It was quite an experience. I came home utterly exhausted. I got to walk Coastal again, for his last walk at Circle Tail before his "people" came to get him. He was the pup that I got to walk my first time, after he had been rejected by some people who were interested in him. I got to see the people who were adopting him on Saturday. They were walking up as I was driving out. Nice little family with a toddler son. I think they'll enjoy the sweet boy. I also got to talk to Friend Gina, which is always a pleasure and now that her parents have moved to town, is a pleasure I get less and less. Haha, Gina! Did you ever think I'd be jealous of your mom? :-)
Sunday was not a happy day as I felt horrid most of the day but what can you do?
And then we come to yesterday. If I had had the time/inclination to write this yesterday, I would have entitled it, "A Beautiful Day in the Neighborhood". It was just a stellar day, warm and sunny. Even better as it was between some nasty cold days. I determined, since it was supposed to be our half-day off, that we'd spend as much time as possible outside soaking up the elusive sunlight. And that we did, at least the twins and I. The girls did have to do their afternoon schoolwork but the twins and I were outside all day except for the time that we had to go to the grocery for meds and eggs.
Ahhhh....there's something about an unexpected beautiful day in the middle of winter. OH! And we saw the first crocuses yesterday, so that's always as red letter day. So, seeing as it was nice out and we were going to be out anyway, I called it a semi-work day. The twins picked up dead wood in the yard while I pooper-scooped. I also moved Elof over to another part of the yard so that he could enjoy being somewhere else for a change. He enjoyed it so much that he wrapped his tether all around the roots of a fallen tree and got to stand in one position until I could come to rescue him. As I tell him almost every day, he is an inordinately stupid animal. Of course, I say it with a smile on my face. But he is rather dumb.
I also picked up all the aluminum cans that Elof had strewn all over the yard and garage from my recycling (and I noted that Friend Husband had cleaned up the garbage he strewed all over the garage, thanks honey!) plus put away those huge plastic sand boxes that were still in the back yard from the summer. After picking up and distributing the fruit & veggie co-op goodies and going to the store, I returned home to think about today and the torrential rainfall that we'd been promised. And, sadly enough for me, I thought about our gutters.
If we have a big rain, our gutters regularly overflow. Part of that is because they are but-old and need to be replaced and part of that is because we have huge old oak trees that deposit an unimaginable amount of leaves and gunk in there. I try to keep up with them but I'm not getting on a roof if it's wet and sometimes I have to just leave it. Seeing as the roof was dry yesterday, I decided to clean out gutters.
No, I don't know what possesses me sometimes. I guess that I, like Elof, am just sometimes an inordinately stupid animal. (Sarah says that the line between nobility and stupidity seems pretty thin to her too.)
So up the ladder, up on the roof, and I was glad I did because, inexplicably, the gutters were full again. I plopped down rotting leaves, twigs, and acorns and got to the ONLY downspout that is on the back of the house. Did I mention that the house doesn't have nearly enough downspouts? No? Well, it doesn't. And this one was full of acorns and other muck that I couldn't get out. I sent Rachel in for a spoon so that I could do that. Digging as deeply as I could, perched on the edge of the roof, with a tablespoon (don't worry, I won't use it if you're coming over for dinner), I still couldn't get all of it out. After I got off the roof (for the first time by myself, yay me!), I moved the ladder over so I could remove the downspout. This, of course, took more time than it really needed to because the screw hadn't been removed in, oh, about 30 years. As I was working on the screw, it started to rain. Lovely. When I finally worked the downspout loose and emptied it, muck poured out of the entire length of it. No wonder we have trouble with the gutters. I still haven't worked up my courage enough to go into the laundry room and see if we still had some overflow but I hope that it was lessened by my mucking out the gutters yesterday.
Well, it seems that time is up and silly twins feel that they need to be fed. But the ouch. I knew that I would be sore today but my word! Trying to get out of the car to work out this morning was a special sort of pain. I hope to feel much better tomorrow. And at least it is now too cold to expect me to clean out gutters for a while.
Oh, I just remembered one more thing when I was looking at David standing here. I put the twins into the tub last night and Keziah kept asking for "hot water, Mama, hotter!" After a shorter amount of time than usual, Keziah asked for me to come get her out. After I got her dried and slathered, I turned to get David. I looked at him just in time to see him stagger back away from the wall of the shower. He had fallen asleep, standing up, with his forehead resting on the wall. Poor little man! He snuggled into my shoulder and slept while I dried him off, slathered him, and dressed him. (I just love it when he's a snuggle-puss.) Of course, he sprang to life after he ate a little but it was still nice to have a sleepy Dave snuggle.
Now I'm really gone. And aren't you glad?

Kinda sad today...
It looks like a guy in a town about 45 minutes north of us is a good match for Elof. I still need to call his vet and look at the place where Elof will be but he sounds good anyway and I think Elof will be happy.
I took him to the vet this morning to have him scanned for a microchip. No chip. He sat down in the backseat of the car like he was a person and didn't even try to come into the front. I'm going to miss the little guy.

Thursday Thirteen # 77
Edit: I don't know why my tables are all wonky. Seems to be a Blogger issue...sorry!
Edit2: I think they're fixed now.
Ok, sad to say, but I haven't read this one. I guess I'd better get on it.
Yay! The girls are jealous.
Hmph.

Yeah, I can see this, although I'm not too mouthy. I'm more passive-aggressive about my opinion sharing.

Spring Break is coming!
Big surprise, this one.
Hmmm...
Seeing as I already do more than one of these jobs, I guess I'm in my proper sphere.
Ok, could be worse...
Hard to be impulsive in my line of work.
Didn't even know that Mia was a German name.

Ok, here's the thing. I was going to something more original for my Thursday Thirteen today. I was waylaid this morning but a ferocious pack of wild dogs. Well, that's not exactly what happened. What happened was that Lucy the Wonder Dog and Elof the Foster Dog were barking barking barking at about 5 this morning. I couldn't figure out what they were barking about and finally decided to go out and find out because you never know what's going on and they haven't made a habit of barking before say, 8 in the morning. It was about 15º F this morning. Roughly. Getting out of my warm bed, it felt like -15. I'll blame it on brain freeze or maybe a brain vacation like Cousin Monica but I wasn't thinking clearly at all. There was nothing of note going on in the garage save a pair of barking dogs but I thought they might need to go to the bathroom and I let Elof out in anticipation of getting Lucy on her leash. See, that was my first mistake. I forgot that you don't let Elof out unless there's food in his bowl. Which there wasn't. So he was off like a shot, sniffed at Balto, the Dog Next Door, then was gone into the frozen tundra. Lucy was, of course, quite miffed that she didn't get to follow so I had to drag her to Elof's line, attach her, then run after Elof. We have a lot of beautiful, fluffy snow on the ground right now. This is not what I want to be running in at 5 AM while I am wearing my bed slippers crammed into my shoes. These are my nice, knitted, wool bed slippers: Note that, while they are nice and warm, they have a substantial gape at the top. Not bad when you're in bed but not at all nice when you are running after a young dog in the beautiful fluffy snow. At 5AM. After about the second load of snow that ended up in my slippers, I gave up, put Lucy back in the warm crate (for which she rewarded me by barking the rest of the morning) and went back into the house. Seeing as it was 5:30 and the alarm was due to go off at 6, I just went downstairs and lost a few games of Scramble waiting for Friend Husband to get up. When the alarm went off, I took my cold self to our bed, told him that Elof had run away, and crawled in. It was awfully hard to get warm again. Some unspecified amount of time later, the bedroom door opened and something cold, furry, and dog-smelling was unceremoniously tossed into my bed. Elof had returned and Friend Husband had brought him in so that I wouldn't worry about him any more. It was lovely. It was almost worth the stellar headache that it looks like I'll be living with all day. So with all of that, I am unable to write anything funny, pithy, or interesting for Thursday Thirteen. I'm sure that this 1) does not surprise my loyal readers and 2) is not a huge hardship to y'all either. Plus I found some really fun ones. So, without further ado, I present the newest of my blog quizzes: This was also fun but not as fun as the countries quiz. 43 |

Having a fallow time...
I guess I've been having a fallow time of not blogging so much. I'm ok with that, but I miss blogging. It's not that I don't have anything to blog about, it's more that I've got so much on my mind that it's hard to sort it all out and figure out what I want out there in public.
It is supposed to be 60º today. I'm freezing. I don't know if there's so much water in the air that it seems cooler than it is or what.
A dog found us the other day. We were saying goodbye to Dinah after a sleepover when Rachel announced that a strange dog was in the driveway. I went out to make sure it was friendly before everybody came out and he ran right up to me, wagging his tail. He seems to have been cared for, was clean and had a choke chain on, but so far no one's claimed him. I call him Elof for a joke. He looks a lot like my great-uncle Luther did at the end of his life with his sweet saggy jowls (the dog, not Luther) but for some reason Elof tickled me more. (Elof was another great-uncle, brother to Luther.) I need to make some more posters to put up in the neighborhood. Here's a picture of him.

He's cute but I'm hoping that someone claims him soon.
I was blogging in Friend Leigh's comments section the other day about Rachel's "lambie" and thought I'd drop it in here as a quick Monday Memories.
When Sarah was born and was sick, I bought her a lambskin to sleep on. Lambskins are supposed to make the baby sleep better, grow faster, etc. Grow Sarah did, but she didn't take a shine to the lambie (pronounced with the "b" intact) which was fine since we had Rachel two years later. Rachel, on the other hand, loved lambie with a vigorous passion.
If Rachel was upset, all we'd have to do is hand her the lambie. She'd rub it on her face, stick her thumb in her mouth, and all was right in her world. She also liked to rub pieces of lambie between her thumb and index finger and, indeed, eventually pulled lambie to pieces doing so. We collected the lambie pieces because they were worth their weight in gold. Nothing but nothing could soothe Rachel like a piece of lambie. It was a sad day when Rachel was grown up enough that lambie did nothing for her and we threw out the collection of lambie bits that we'd saved.
Once, we dropped something off at Kinko's for Doug. He went to pick it up hours later and, upon entering the store, saw a piece of lambie that Rachel had dropped when she entered. He chuckled to himself and related the finding when he got home. He knew we'd been there. Lambie was there.
Sarah had her bink (a pacifier or "dummy") and Rachel had lambie. Abby was just a rabid nurser. I guess I was her lovey. I'm not sure that the twins had lovies other than each other but that has always seemed to work for them. Friend Husband had a blanket with fringes on it (it was called the "fringe-ah" by my mil). I had a doll that I slept with from the time I was two until I got married. Sometimes when I'm really upset, I still dig that doll out and sleep with her clutched to my chest. Lovies are so powerful and special.
What do you remember about your lovey?
